Discord's upload limits
Free Discord accounts can upload files up to 10 MB (raised from 8 MB in 2023, which is why so many guides still say 8). Nitro Basic raises it to 50 MB and Nitro to 500 MB; a server boosted to level 2 or 3 gives every member 50 or 100 MB. Most people asking how to compress a video for Discord are on the free tier, so this page targets 10 MB. If your server is boosted, type 50 or 100 into the size box instead.
Ten megabytes is tight. A game clip captured at 1080p60 runs 15–30 Mbps, so the limit is hit in three to five seconds. The compressor deals with this by lowering bitrate first, then resolution and, if you allow it in Advanced, frame rate — each step buys a longer clip that still plays cleanly inline in the chat.
What to expect at 10 MB
A 15-second clip fits at 1080p with sound and looks good. Thirty seconds lands at 720p. A one-minute clip ends up around 480p, and past two minutes you are looking at 360p — at that point it is better to trim to the highlight with Trim Video ↗ and compress the shorter piece. The estimate line under the Compress button tells you the resolution the compressor has chosen before you start, so you can decide to trim rather than accept the drop.
Game footage compresses worse than most video because everything moves every frame. Two settings help a lot: cap the frame rate at 30 in Advanced (game captures are usually 60 fps, and 30 halves the bits needed per second for the same picture quality), and remove the audio if the clip is about what happened on screen rather than what was said. Both are one click. Discord shows the compressed file inline with a thumbnail and plays it in the client, so the result is the same experience as an uncompressed upload, just smaller.
Why not use a Discord video compressor website that uploads?
Most of them work, but they add the upload time — often longer than the compression itself — and usually cap free uploads at a few hundred megabytes, which a raw game recording exceeds quickly. This compressor never sends the file anywhere. Your device's own hardware encoder does the work, so a 1.5 GB recording compresses in about the time it takes to play a fraction of it, and nothing about your clip ends up on someone else's server. It also works offline once the page has loaded.

Is the free limit 8 MB or 10 MB?
10 MB since April 2023. The preset here aims just under 10; if you are on an older guide's advice or an app that still enforces 8, type 8 into the size box.
The result is 9.6 MB, not 10. Why?
Bitrate control is not exact, so the compressor aims about 5% under the limit. A file at 10.1 MB would be rejected by Discord, so the margin is on purpose.
Will Discord re-compress it?
No. Discord stores and serves the file as uploaded. What you see in the preview player here is what the server sees.
Can I compress a clip from OBS or ShadowPlay?
Yes. Those produce MP4 or MKV with H.264 or HEVC, which are decoded natively. Very high bitrate HEVC captures may need Chrome or Edge, which decode the most formats.
