What "without losing quality" really means
Strictly, every re-encode of a video loses something: H.264, HEVC and AV1 are lossy codecs, and there is no zip-style compression that makes a video file meaningfully smaller without decoding it. What is possible — and what people mean — is removing information the eye cannot see. Cameras and phones encode in real time with a generous bitrate because they have to keep up with the sensor; a second pass, with time to look at each frame, reaches the same visible quality in far fewer bits. The saving is typically 30–50% on phone footage and more on screen recordings, at a quality level where side-by-side comparison on a normal screen shows no difference.
This page sets the compressor to its High preset, which allots about 0.1 bits per pixel per frame for H.264 — roughly what streaming services use for their top 1080p tier — and keeps the resolution, frame rate and audio exactly as they were. Nothing is downscaled and nothing is dropped; only the encoder's spending is corrected.
How to get the smallest file that still looks identical
Drop the video and leave High selected. The estimate line shows the expected size; if it says the source is already this small, the file was already efficiently encoded (exports from editors and downloads from streaming sites usually are) and re-encoding would only add loss — keep the original. Otherwise press Compress and, when it finishes, play the result and the original side by side. If you cannot tell them apart, try Balanced next time: it is usually another 30% smaller and still indistinguishable on a phone or laptop screen. Every run starts from your original, so experimenting costs nothing.
The codec choice matters more than any other setting for quality per byte. H.265/HEVC gives the same picture in about two-thirds of the bits of H.264 and plays on every iPhone, Mac and modern PC; AV1 does better still and is right for anything going on a website. Both are in the Advanced tab, and the menu only shows the ones your device can encode in hardware. Keep the audio on "Keep as is": copying it costs nothing in quality and it is a small part of the file anyway.
What not to do
Do not compress a file that has already been compressed by a chat app: WhatsApp, Messenger and Telegram output is already at a low bitrate, and a second pass only compounds the artefacts. Do not downscale unless the target screen is smaller than the source — a 1080p file for a 1080p phone screen should stay 1080p. Do not use percentage presets when quality is the goal; they set a size, and a size does not know what the footage needs. And do not upload the original to a compression website to do this: the transfer takes longer than the encode, the free tiers cap the file size, and the whole job runs in your browser here with your device's own hardware encoder, at no cost and with the file never leaving your disk.
Frequently asked questions
Is this truly lossless?
No — no practical video compression is. It is visually lossless: the picture on a screen looks the same. If you need a bit-exact copy, keep the original file; this tool never modifies it.
How much smaller can I expect?
30–50% on phone and camera footage at High, sometimes more on screen recordings. Files that were already exported at a low bitrate may not shrink at all, and the estimate will say so.
Should I choose HEVC or AV1?
HEVC if the video is for people on phones and computers; AV1 if it is going on the web. Both give the same quality in fewer bits than H.264. H.264 if it must play on very old devices.
Why does the estimate say compressing will not help?
The source bitrate is already at or below what this tool would choose. Re-encoding would make it slightly smaller and slightly worse. Keep the original.
